St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin missed his team’s last game and it’s unclear if he’ll be back on the sideline in time for Thursday’s game against Kentucky. He is recovering from prostate cancer surgery.
“Naturally, I have to continue to be mindful of my stamina and how I utilize energy as I recuperate from surgery,” Coach Lavin said in a statement released by St. John’s. “I am working closely with our staff and players as we continue to build our team in preparation for the rigors of conference play.”
Lavin had the surgery in early October and it kept him away from basketball for almost a month. He missed the season opener but was back with the team for the next four games. He has participated in practices this week.
We hope to see Lavin out there in what is arguably his team’s biggest game of the season.
Get better, Coach.

Lavin is being mislead by our healthcare system! It’s too early to say he is cancer free!

Off topic. Great article from Greg Doyle on Urban Meyer hire:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/16270672/forget-the-other-stuff-meyer-is-perfect-hire-for-buckeyes
He says it is “Urban Meyer to Ohio State is the perfect hire. It’s Calipari-to-Kentucky perfect.” He also references his March 30, 2009 article when he went against the grain from the National Media and was first on the Calipari Bus.

I hate opposing coaches, but I hate cancer worse. Its a terrible killer that swipes too many folks at too young an age. Get better Coach Lavin, beat that disease so that we can have the pleasure of beating your teams for many years in the future!

Wishing Coach Lavin a quick and full recovery. My brother was just diagnosed last month with the same thing – will most likely be undergoing Da Vinci robotic surgery at Vandy after the first of the year. Yes, cancer sucks, but we have come a long way in treating it. it is often no longer an automatic death sentence. I have my wife, sister, best friend, and hopefully soon my brother as cancer survivors to prove that it can be beat! Lastly – support St. Baldrick’s!! No child should ever have to suffer or die from this disease!

Surgery for prostate cancer is worse than the disease.
If you ever get the diagnosis, get radiation, never surgery.

Lavin has now said he will not coach the team Thursday. He tried to return to the sideline too soon.
