Wednesday’s Football Practice Notes and Today’s Podcast

With only a couple days before the Cats head to Florida to take on the Gators, Coach Phillips met with the media. He touched on just about everything, which made for an extremely interesting meeting. There were apologies, threats on a certain former Kentucky QB, and Phillips kind of coping with the talent level on his football team. Take a look.

******************************

-When asked about his shoulder injury, QB Maxwell Smith said it’s still bothering him some. “It’s just alright. Definitely not close to 100%.” The Cats need him to be in tip-top shape, if they expect to stun the Gators on Saturday.

-WLB Bud Dupree thinks the bad tackling from that defense can be attributed to over-pursuing, and “players not being in the place they are suppose to be.” Dupree notched 12 tackles against WKU, so he’s not really a part of the problem.

-In his second game at WLB, Dupree thinks he made a lot of progress in his new position. “I read my keys better, but I’m still getting used to reading the offensive line back there. It’s different from rush end.”

-Dupree said freshman LB Khalid Henderson has made progress in his second game spelling Dupree at WLB. Henderson will probably be asked to play big minutes in the upcoming conference games, a tough task as a true freshman.

-Defensive line coach David Turner feels like the struggles of the group goes back to technique and fundamentals. “It’s all hand placement, separation, coming out of your hips, read the ball and finishing the play.”

-When asked if the defensive line is still expected to be the strength of Kentucky’s defense, Turner said he first and foremost wants the line to play better. Turner does expect the line to get better throughout the season, and become a force upfront.

-Turner said it’s great to have DE/LB Taylor Wyndham back in the mix. “He’s one of the better technicians on the team, he’s a senior leader. He’s able to show the younger guys how it’s done, and help them along.”

Matt and the gang touched on the Big Blue Madness campout, the NCAA, and what else… UK Football. Have a listen.

Max is doing well but the chuck and duck, screen pass offense is going to get drilled by Florida’s speed on defense.

Watch for a national coming out party this weekend on defense for Miles Simpson. The team as a whole is still young and still working on things, but with a man in the middle of that D like Simpson, this defense will rise up. They will be talking positively afterwards about his play. Watch and see…….

I am debating on even watching the game. I can think of plenty of things to do other than watch our football team get slaughtered on a saturday afternoon. Suppose to be nice weather.. Golf anyone?

  5. CatGrad7072

Dang, that’s hard to watch and difficult to hear. It seems like they should move these Q&A sessions indoors where they could have a more professional and controlled atmosphere.

@4 Golf sounds great, where we playing?

  7. Catlogic15

Dupree says bad tackling due to “players not being in the place they are supposed to be”.

Man I hope we don’t lose him early to go study at Oxford.

Miles Simpson is absolutely lost on D. Every time the ball is snapped, he basically takes about 5 stutter steps and then reacts to the play, usually after it has already gone by him. I hope he improves, that position is supposed to be the playmaker on our defense, and he has made none. Falling on a fumble with 4 others doesn’t qualify.

HHMMMM 3 to 5 year guys, on the line, having the issue`s above. I wonder whos fault this is?? I hope Barnhart is listening to these statements.

@6 hidden creek jeffersonville, in… be there or be square.. LOL

Let’s talk about the offense also.

“Hey, it’s third-and-16! We need 16 yards to keep the drive alive. I know, let’s throw a screen pass for two yards!”

  12. wildcat502

    11 – I complained about that last year too…………….hhmmm

    7) ummm…huh? I guess you are trying to make fun of Rashawn Franklin’s lack of grammar check but I don’t see what that has to do with Dupree. Also, you wrote it correctly in your post so you just look really stupid.

#13. It was humor on Dupree’s statement. I don’t expect we’ll see you at Oxford anytime soon either.

We’re talking about the cats having HIGH SCHOOL fundamental issues against high profile SEC athletes. The problem isn’t the x’s and o’s … it’s the Jimmy’s and Joe’s. Coaching how it’s supposed to be done will only get you so far. We’re either getting kids that are athletic enough to play the position, but not smart enough to remember how to do the job… or guys that are smart enough to do the job, but aren’t athletic enough to get to the spot in time. Without having players that can play fundamentally sound football and be talented enough to KEEP UP with the competition, we’ll always be bottom of the heap in the SEC…. none of this, however, is an excuse to lose to WKU.

#13 – I think he is pointing out that someone is stating the obvious and adding a little sarcasm. Not pointing out a grammar error.

    Get it?

  17. cdc_uky

What does all of this have to do with basketball anyway?

  18. schwing

    why is joker smiling?

    @13 Must be a little slow…..

just by watching Joker in this video, you would think UK is 3- 0 and not listed as one of the 10 worst programs in the country. It is no wonder the Cats are so bad. If someone does the wrong thing and are never corrected or diciplined for doing the wrong thing they will keep doing it. Joker was prolly handing out ice cream at half time of the wku debacle. He needs to get good and pissed off one time. You’d think willie taggert and wku slapping him right in the mouth would have done the trick. But sadly we all know Joker and to a fault he is all smiles. Sad story for an overly “happy” guy. However, Joker still gets paid and smiles while UK football goes back to the levels below the dungeon of the SEC.

of course Dupree picked up 12 tackles.. this is easy to do when no one else is tackling.
