Weigh in on the Rupp Arena renovation plans

New_Rupp

The Rupp Arena renovation plans are inching along, and the Lexington Center Corporation Board Members want your feedback on what you’d like to see in the new Rupp. The board posted the following survey recently, which includes questions about how fans feel about the current Rupp, what they want in a new Rupp, and how to pay for it all.

Among the possible features for the new Rupp is a Suite-Level Club, memberships to which the survey says would be available to anyone (likely with season tickets and a K-Fund contribution), and, as they carefully note, could include the sale of alcoholic beverages. Here are some similar mockups from other venues:

Other premium seating options the survey lists are court-level club and loge seating. It seems like the new Rupp will include at least one of the three premium seating options (suite, court, or loge seating) and they want to know which the fans prefer the most.

The most important issue the survey addresses is how the renovations will be funded. The options listed are ticket surcharges, premium seat leases, arena naming rights, corporate advertising, donations/fundraising, hotel/motel tax, car rental tax, increased sales tax and tax increment financing.

If you’ve got some time to kill, go let the LCC Board know your thoughts on the new Rupp:

So, the club level comes complete with high-end call girls over by the bar?

  2. MoneyBags McCoalMillions

    Let’s hope so #1 !

  3. Maxbps8

The survey is WAY too long. I stopped after about four minutes that seemed like 40.

  4. embarrassed

Taking revenue money away from coal counties that are broke just to keep up with Louisville is beyond believe. Rupp belongs to the city of Lexington so let them pay for the cost not the citizens of counties that are cutting out every public service and laying off workers to balance their budgets. Shame on Frankfort and Lexington.

  5. rabble rabble rabble

i wish UK would just build a new Rupp on campus. F the lexington center corp board. F them right in the ear.

  6. tom

    RETURN COCA COLA TO RUPP!!

  7. BlueDeuce

Hate to say it but it’s time to sell the naming rights to the arena. I know Rupp is history and so much more but using public funds to renovate is not the way to go. University funded, private funding and naming rights is the path to take. Big, big money to be had there!

    I like option #1 too.

  8. This Survey is Rigged

I just left this comment on their survey.

This survey is tailored to get the results you want the most, and is deceiving. There is no option for “Lowering” the price of anything, even concessions (which promised more variety at higher AND lower prices–I am not excited about buying candy for less when the price of actual food will doubtlessly increase). You don’t even give us the options of $5, $4, or $3 thousand dollar donations upfront. Instead the options are staggered one-at-a-time, from highest sum to lowest, giving people the impression that you can either give us this large sum of money, or you won’t have the opportunity to be in this new section of the arena.

Every option on the entire survey works towards one central question: “Which price increase will you tolerate the most?”

The arena has generated enormous profits throughout its history, and stands to make even more after the renovation. Shouldn’t those profits be what the renovated arena is funded from? If that isn’t enough money to accomplish the renovations, then maybe it isn’t a sound investment in the first place. Stop tailoring surveys to get the answers you want, and just ask the questions upfront. It is unfair to the people who actually care enough to invest parts of their modest incomes to participate in whatever event is held in Rupp.

  9. raped again

The coal producing counties are being raped and pillaged again to pay for Lexington and Louisville’s high spending. Most people in Eastern Ky have never had the privilege of entering Rupp and now we are paying to give it an extravagant make over. Hope the people in Lexington know that all the coal severance money that was to go to coal producing counties to pay for county budget expences has been deverted to Lexington to pay for the Rupp make over. All the Serior Citizens that have lost services such as free lunches and transportation and all the county employees that have lost their jobs due to budget short falls hope you enjoy their gift to you.

  10. getaclue

#9- Seriously check your facts. Jefferson County produces 46% of the total tax revenue Frankfort takes in every year. The state returns a measly 19% back to Jefferson County in that form of any state aid or funded projects. Without Jefferson County and Fayette County and some counties near Cincinnati there wouldnt be any money coming to the so called coal producing counties to who you refer. The only taxpayers getting stuck with the bonds that funded the KFC YUM center are those in Jefferson County. So maybe you owe a debt of gratitude to those that provide the blanket of entitlements you live under instead of questioning the means on which it is provided. Channeling Jack Nicholson!

This is over a week old, step-up your game KSR. You’re better than this.

I filled out the survey with the following suggestion:
The concept of season tickets should be revamped or retired. You have long-time ticket holders clinging to their allocation beyond the grave and selling tickets to people like me who really want to cheer on the Cats. Currently the nearly-departed populate the lower arena while the true fans are in the upper level and eRUPPtion zone. How about eliminating season tickets, raise per-game ticket prices, and allow the true fans who want to splurge, buy a pair of lower-level seats once a year. How about an efficient ticket exchange where a ticket holder who is unable to attend can make those available up until game time in order to fill the place every game. Require the ticket purchaser to show up game time or return tickets to the exchange for a possible refund if someone repurchases their ticket through the exchange.

    3. Took me 5-10mins tops

  14. Stoops

    8. No matter how the survey was done or what was said, people would complain.

  16. Got it right

    # 12 got it pretty much right on the head. Tired of all the blue hairs that occupy lower RUPP and act like its a damn chore to be there. I am NOT a student I put that on my life. But I would love to see a wrap around student section in lower arena similar to mich.st’s. UK has the rowdiest passionate fan base. It’s a shame the way it’s set up now.

  17. UKBlue

They should: pull a UL & get the state to do a TIF district(UL currently has 3 TIF districts (1 is the 2nd largest in the country) to get taxpayers to pay for all their crap), The state should get their head out of their asses & give us slots – the tax from that can be used to pay for this instead of taking money away from the coal areas (this would also help fix the horse biz at the same time), and they should defiantly get bonding issues from the state like they are with Commonwealth. Finally UK is figuring out ways to raise big money. If they start selling alcohol in Rupp, look out at all the money that’s going to bring in. Frankfort is proof you can’t fix stupid; I have all the confidence in the world they will screw this up just like they have state pensions & everything else.

    10. All true except when the Yum Center goes bad, they’re going to try using the state ie taxpayers as the third line of defense to pay off this black hole.

  18. BigBlue

To the idiot that keeps rambling on about the coal counties…the coal counties don’t pay squat when it comes to taxes. If the whole state was dependent on their level of economic input KY would be like a third world country!

  19. idontflinch

When it comes to Rupp’s renovations I would like to see things to get done that would affect me the most. I can tell you suites and court level seating won’t be affecting me at all. The upper section is usually where I wind up (especially for UK games) and it needs renovating in a bad way. Get rid of those stinking bleachers and install some real seats that have armrests with somewhere to store my drink. As it is now, it’s terrible. You say it will reduce the number of seats therefore reducing the maximum number of people who can be squeezed into Rupp on game day or for a concert. I say so what? That terrible is seating is exactly why I have always preferred to drive an extra hour and a half to go to Duh Ville to catch a concert instead of Lexington whenever possible because I never want to take the chance on getting a seat in the upper level at Rupp. Lower level is fine, but upper level is most certainly not.

  20. WEAREUK

    19. I set in the upper level alot and enjoy the bleachers/sightlines. People need to stay at home if they want real seats, armrest and cup holder JMO

  21. Tradition

Leave the name alone. “Rupp Arena” needs to stay. Want the Coal Center at Rupp Arena or Lexmark Coliseum?
No…. Let the big spenders/corporate entities buy suites, etc. but don’t give over the naming rights!

  22. Scout

I am sick of the rich Tatas who rarely cheer or stand up in the lower arena. Put them in their loge area and give the seats to students. Also, how can alcohol be served anywhere during a game? Isn’t that an SEC ruling? Finally, ask former players where their tickets are. Those you see with great seats have paid their K-Fund money. UK does not take care of them.

  23. Secretariat

Coal is a dying industry. The coal-mining regions HAVE to work to find another, more sustainable job base. At this point, it is throwing money away (as well as discouraging new options that are viable long-term) to continue to subsidize the industry.

  24. iagree

    21. I agree. Please do not change the name in any shape, form or fashion.

  25. mdsam

Sucks that we don’t get a new arena like Louisville. YUM is nicest arena I have visited and that includes Barclays when I went for Maryland game. UK Basketball shouldn’t be hostage to Lexington or the Hyatt/Downtown BS. But guess none of that is an option. Where will they play when Rupp is being renovated?

  26. WEAREUK

    5. They’ve said they will still be able to play at Rupp.

  27. G

As soon as Cal leaves and the program goes back to 10-15 years of being mediocre, this will all seem a little over the top.

  28. lou eaton

Rupp arena should be the centerpiece of downtown Lexington regardless of what renovations occur. I just hope that folks will be able to quickly identify Rupp from the HOTEL! I think it has been a sham forever that the image is that of a HOTEL vs a BB facility or rental car address. Just make it the central attraction and forget frills except for seating…….
