UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

Some notes from a lazy Wednesday:

— I have to tell you that I love the little bit of trash talk we got yesterday from Zadarius Smith and the UK team. Smith was asked about Florida and said, “It’s an OK team, I’m not just going to say (that) they’re all that. Hey, it’s the SEC.” When asked if they looked bigger/faster/stronger on tape than he expected, he said, “No they didn’t, they actually looked smaller than people we already played.” To me, that is the type of mindset UK needs to play with in the Stoops era. I know there are probably some concerns that this gives bulletin board material for Florida and I am sure that is correct. But what matters much more is to change the way Kentucky football players approach each game. When you have lost to a team 26 straight times (dating back to the RONALD REAGAN ADMINISTRATION), it is clear that whatever was being done in the past didn’t work. If Zadarius and the rest can get up for the game by talking a slight bit of trash, more power to them. Kentucky needs to end the Gator streak for all the former players who got close and didn’t quite get there (granted that isn’t very many). Changing the UK football history is first about changing the culture and maybe Zadarius took a step to doing just that. Or maybe it was simply stupid. Who knows.

— I for one hope that Kentucky comes out in the grey uniforms pictured above on Saturday. Apparently the Cats are using it for one game this year and this seems like the best choice (quality opponent and a chance at pulling an upset). Fans seem to generally support the move and while Mark Stoops downplayed it on his call-in show (suggesting we would wear “traditional” uniforms…my guess is he said it with a sly smile, since the Cats have already worn black), I think Saturday with the Cats in grey would be a sight to see. Uniforms matter (look at the Oregon success story) and as Western Kentucky showed when they played in Nashville (with sleek chrome helmets), looking good can equal playing good. Wear grey and if possible, STAND UP! I know not everyone can do it, but as I addressed in my KSR Minute the other night, for those who can, GET OFF YOUR FEET Saturday night:

— I know I sound like a broken record, but I can’t wait for this basketball team to take the floor. The Cats have had two practices and if you read the reports on John Calipari’s website, they clearly have gone well. But what is much more interesting to me is the talk of those who have seen the team play and are outside the program. From Jay Bilas to Seth Greenberg to Dick Vitale, everyone is praising UK and how good they can be. The consensus seems to be that in addition to the talent, the team chemistry with this group is just different. You could see it during the Fantasy Camp with how the players related to each other and the campers, and the energy around the group is on another level from last year. As ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg told me yesterday, “I saw the team against Maryland and I didn’t like their attitude, their body types or the way they interacted. This group, I like everything I didn’t like last year.” Be ready, that is all I can say.

— Finally, I hope you heard Dick Vitale praising the Cats on the show today. He ranked UK as his preseason #1 team but also talked about how special each player could be. He mentioned that when he talks to Calipari, he is not only excited about the stars but mentions what a player Marcus Lee will be and how Jarrod Polson has risen to the challenge in competing against Andrew Harrison every day in practice. Vitale thinks this is the best group in the nation but notes, that this year there are a number of really good teams. He has 1. UK, 2. Michigan State, 3. Louisville, 4. Duke and 5. Kansas. Coincidentally, that is my top five as well (I might flip Duke and Louisville), and all five will be loaded. If you get a chance, listen to Vitale’s entire interview in hour 2 below:

KSR INTERVIEW WITH DICKIE V

Finally, before we take the field against Florida, Mark Stoops will want to pump up the troops. I am sure he has a great speech prepared, but when it comes to speeches, only one works, the one given by Will Forte to Peyton Manning’s team on SNL. If that doesn’t work, nothing will:

“bulletin board material” is so overrated. keep talking trash Z. our team needs it more than theirs needs the material.

Peyton Manning and Justin Timberlake are the two greatest guests ever on SNL

“GET OFF YOUR FEET” sounds like something rex ryan does in his spare time

Tyson- bulletin board material IS NOT over rated. Don’t know if you’ve ever played major college football but it is very important. Especially when a ranked team like Florida is playing a big underdog like UK. There is a chance the Gators might be overlooking Kentucky but these kind of quotes can sometimes snap a favored team back into reality.

That said, the swagger can be a good thing but utter it knowing there will likely be consequences. Better to keep quiet and let your actions on the field speak for you…until you break a 26 game losing streak

A better comparison for this would be 2012 which is the benchmark for Cal’s tenure.

  9. Question??

Speaking of Dickie V and the cancer foundation. Does anybody have an update on the little baby that was featured on KSR a few months ago that had cancer behind his eye. My family and I pray for him nightly and I would love an update. Thanks.

  10. Sometimes...

Had some friends down this weekend for an Alabama game. One is a UK football season ticket holder but all commented on how 98.7% of the people you saw had on something with Bama on it and almost all of that was Crimson. You go into the stadium it is a sea of Crimson. Personally I disagree with Matt’s assertion that uniforms matter (Oregon is doing what they are because of uniforms? Yeah, Pepsi led to the Berlin Wall being knocked down, too) but if they do, and if it follows from that what the fans wear matters, what the hell is wrong with blue? Grey? In Commonwealth? Wouldn’t it be great to walk into Commonwealth and see a stadium full of Kentucky blue clad fans and players? Grey? Isn’t that the most boring color on the planet?

THOSE GRAY UNIS AND GRAY HELMET = FREAKING SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE HELMET IS AWESOME

I also pray for a little boy named John Ryan every night. He was on here a couole of months ago. Not sure if it the same as #9, but would also like to be updated. Still praying.

It doesn’t bother me to stand for a football game but what about the smaller children and older adults or people with other disabilities? Should they get a chance to see the game too?

  15. Craptastic

Matt you’re a football imbecile. “Uniforms matter”? Funny how, outside of Oregon, the top teams play in pretty traditional threads and don’t turn their football games into damned fashion shows. It’s hackish, amateur and silly. Can’t wait for Bama, Georgia or LSU to break out some whacked out duds. They’ll play better I’m sure. Stick to basketball.

  16. Entitled or not?

From all indications the talent level, depth and work ethics are entirely different this year than in 2012. Thank goodness!

Is there any chance of Sean Woods getting an opportunity to meet this years basketball team? His assessment last year was very telling, even though he took a lot of heat for stating it.

  17. Gary

Matt…until you pay for everyone else’s seat dont tell them what to do with them.

  18. Tired of Being 1 of 12 Games

If UK wants the fans to be into the game, do not go 0-13 on 3rd down. Do not drop a lot of passes, and miss wide open WR’s. Fans standing up, or them sitting down has not been the problem. It has been effort by the players. During the joker era, there was not 1 game that the team played hard for a whole game, anybody that was at a game could see that and would look like a fool standing up 1/2 of the game. During the UK-LSU game in 2007, the UK crowd noise was amazing because we know that that UK team was going to come to compete to win. If the UK players come to compete to win the UK fans will get on their feet and get loud. The reason Alabama football fans are loud and follow their team so well is they trust that their team will play with pride to win every time out.

  19. Gary

Ok Matt…..here’s your true calling. You’d be the perfect person at church services to tell people when to sit and when to stand. You should really consider this career change.

You are getting a lot better on camera, Matt. Good work!
And thanks for putting the word out for Team Stand Up.
