According to the official Packers website, Tim Masthay set the franchise single-season record for highest gross and net punting average.

- Heading into week 17, Masthay had a 45.7-yard gross average, and 38.3-yard net average. The team record for gross average was set by former P Craig Hentrich with a 45.0-yard mark in 1997. Tim posted a 44 yard average after Sunday’s contest with the Lions, which allowed him to break Hentrich’s record.

- Apparently, the Packers don’t keep official records for net averages, but several outlets reported that Masthay broke the standing unofficial record as well.

- As the Milwaukee Journal- Sentinel reported last week, Masthay struggled early in the season:

Green Bay – It was Oct. 12, just five weeks into the season, when Green Bay Packers special teams coach Shawn Slocum tried to explain the poor ranking of punter Tim Masthay.

“It’s all about the full body of work,” Slocum said at the time of Masthay ranking fifth worst in the NFL in gross average and second worst in net. “That’s how you judge his production. I think he’s hitting the ball well.”

Two and half months later, he isn’t quite ready to make a full assessment of Masthay, but clearly the numbers have tilted the young punter’s way.

Over the last nine games, he has averaged 48.2 yards gross and 42.3 yards net, moving him up the charts to 12th in gross average (45.8) and 20th in net (38.0). In addition, he has had 11 of his last 16 punts held inside the 20-yard, including back-to-back games with four apiece.

- Masthay is having a heck of a year and even better career. The good people in Cheeseland are starting to realize just how special their Ginger specialist really is. JSOnline.com interviewed Tim for their “Get to Know” series, where he gushed on his love of the Counting Crows, ‘Moneyball’ and this: (JSO Questions in bold)

If you had another job, what would it be? I think I’d like being a college athletic director. I think I would like that a lot. I would say a college athletic director, a coach or a missionary of sorts that works toward economic development.

And later

What prompted the college AD aspirations? I love sports across the board. As an AD, your hand is in every sport at the university. Part of it may be my upbringing. I love being around universities and in university towns. There’s energy and so many different things going on in educational opportunities. I love university towns. I always like leadership stuff, so that’s what the position has. I don’t know all the ins and outs of being an AD, but obviously but I think I’d like it.

Kentucky? That would be awesome. That would be pretty cool.

Go Cats.

Masthay’s league rankings suffer because he’s (a) not playing indoors, and (b) playing in the cold. It’s much harder to compress a cold football, and the cold air holds the ball down, regardless of wind direction. It’s indicative that he’s on pace to set the team record, despite being just 12th in the league.
