The race for second in the SEC East

As Kentucky gets set for their final five games of the year, the chances of winning the SEC East regular season title has essentially evaporated as the Cats struggled to win conference games away from Rupp.  They sport a disappointing 6-5 record, which ties them with Tennessee and Georgia, but leaves them only one game behind Vanderbilt in the quest for the presumably necessary second East seed in the SEC Tournament.  Given UK’s thin roster, there’s a significant need to avoid playing Thursday.  Four games in four days is a lot harder than three games in three days.  So the focus now becomes catching and eventually passing Vanderbilt.

Here’s the remaining games for both:

VANDY
@  Auburn
Tennessee
@  LSU
@  UK
Florida

KENTUCKY
South Carolina
@ Arkansas
Florida
Vanderbilt
@ Tennessee

In order for Kentucky to pass the Commodores and earn the first round bye, they would most likely need to finish at least 4-1 in the season’s final five games with one of those wins being on Senior Day in their head-to-head matchup.  Vanderbilt, who like UK has played great at home and had issues on the road, have the advantage of traveling to LSU and Auburn in what you can assume are guaranteed wins.  So, for Kentucky to catch them, they’ll likely have to drop two of their last three within the division.  More importantly, for the Cats to get the second seed, they’ll want them to fall to Florida again.

If both teams finish with a 10-6 record in SEC pay, the tiebreaker will be determined by whoever fared better within their division.  The Cats would win by one game, thanks to Vandy’s early loss to South Carolina.  However, if the Vandy were to drop one of the road games against LSU or Auburn and then one to an SEC opponent, the next tiebreaker would be whoever fared the best against Florida.  Both teams have already lost to the Gators, meaning their remaining games with Billy Donovan’s team carries even more significance.  If they both were to lose again, then you move down the ladder with the record against each SEC East team, which could potentially be the same until South Carolina.  And that would favor the Cats.

What does this mean?  I have a headache and Kentucky needs to just win the damn games.  That should take care of that.

The only game we should even think about being a possible loss is Tennessee. We’ll win out in Rupp, and I don’t see us dropping one at Arkansas.

When UK goes out before the weekend it always seems to be the late game on Friday. The East #3 plays at 10:00 on TH and Friday. If we can’t get the East #2, I would rather have the East #4.

I agree with #3. Win out at Rupp and UK is in great shape. Arkansas should be a win and the Vols will make it a game in Knoxville. I just really do not want to go to Atlanta on Thursday.

It feels time the Tubby era again. Ah, nostalgia…

It sounds like it may be too simple to say to this team but i think Cal’s pregame speech should just be “GO WIN THE F*#KING GAME!!!” We obviously have the talent to beat anyone….so just go do it.

    6) In the Tubby era we weren’t anticipating another bumper crop of players next year

The thing that doesn’t get mentioned is Florida has five games remaining too. Florida has been incredibly lucky this season with overtime wins, last second shots, the missed foul against Vanderbilt as John Jenkins took a three at the buzzer. It’s conceivable that Florida could lose four out of it’s last five games. (UGA, @UK, Bama, @Vandy) Even if they lost only three of those, UK could move into the top 2 by winning out, regardless of what Vandy does. And if we screw up, those other 6-5 teams leapfrog us. The SEC East is very tight right now.

(Note to my #9 above, I haven’t actually figured the tiebreaker scenario in that situation, if Vandy and UK both win out and UK ends tied with Flordia, or if Vandy-UK-Fla end up in a 3-way tie)

Don’t forget about ut. If they can beat Vandy in Nashville you could easily have a 3 way tie.

It makes me sick to think that ONE layup or ONE turnover has costed us a 2 seed in the NCAA tourney, if not a 1 seed.

  17. RACE for 2nd in the WEAK SEC???

OMG!!!! what a joke this team has turned into!!! RACE for SECOND against in the EAST in the WORST BCS BASKETBALL CONFERENCE???? ARE YOU FKING KIDDDING ME!!!!!! What a PITIFUL disgrace to the UK program…. WHAT NEXT, PRAYING FOR RUNNER-UP IN THE JOKE SEC TOURNEY??? YEAH RIGHT…. DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH YOU STUPID IN-BRED KY FANS!

I think Cats need to play pressure defense or at least mix it up at times. Wildcats need to take a page out of Lady Wildcats who plays terrific pressure defense and live off of turnovers to easy transition buckets. I know Cats can make it a half court game and grind it out but that limits the possessions but with this team being a better scoring team I think we need to take our chances put up 80-90 points every game. I do not think Arkansas game will be an easy game it seems like every team outside of South Carolina shot the lights out when we played away games in SEC.

I would rather want Cats to be a #3 seed if they cannot get a #2 seed because SEC East #3 plays SEC West #6 team. So most likely we will face LSU or Auburn, if we end up as a #4 seed then we are more likely to play either Mississippi State or Mississippi. I want Cats to stay away from facing teams from Magnolia State.

Remember son, riding with “her” in the front seat does not qualify you to ride in the HOV lane on the interstate. And, when you take “her” to a restaurant, it is still a “party of 1”.

    Enjoy.

17 – The SEC is weak. The SEC East isn’t. Three of the six teams in the division are ranked. No other division in the country (or no other conference, for those without divisions) has 50% of its teams ranked right now.
