After spending a month with the football team nearly everyday, I have developed a pretty good understanding of how this season is going to play out. While today’s game has more unknowns than maybe any other season opener, my feet have become wet enough to to know exactly what in the hell is going on. Here’s a few quick hitters….
2 QBs? That’s a good one. Jalen Whitlow will start and will play the entire game unless something crazy happens. The staff is smart enough to instill confidence in their QB by making him ‘the guy’; despite telling the media that both will play, in the words of Lee Corso, “FORGET ABOUT IT.” USC showed Thursday night that it isn’t a bright idea to dabble with two. The most likely scenario is throwing Max in the game once in a blue moon just to freak out the opposing team, other than that, prepare for Jalen Whitlow to be ‘the guy’ in the Air Raid.
A newcomer will start at cornerback. Cody Quinn hasn’t been on the practice field in over two weeks. Facts are optional at KSR, but I don’t even think the Sophomore CB traveled with the team (I also thought I saw him walking on campus in a boot, but I’m bad with faces). Jaleel Hytchye is likely his replacement, running with the first team for the majority of the pre-season. He packs more speed than Blake McClain and is in better shape than Nate Willis. Don’t worry too much though, the true freshman will likely spend the majority of the game covering another true freshman.
Antonio Andrews will be neutralized. The ONLY way that WKU can win is if Mr. Andrews plays like Barry Sanders, something he did for the entirety of last season. The difference between this and last year is UK’s defensive line. The front four is one of the best in the SEC (yeah I said it), leaving Sun Belt lineman a tall task in the trenches. It’s hard to get going without a line blocking for you. Avery will have a free for all while the Dline takes WKU’s offense to a stalemate.
High Tempo is more difficult than you think. Did you watch the South Carolina game Thursday night? Did you listen to David Pollack’s unrelenting criticism of Jadeveon Clowney? The best player in college football couldn’t hang with UNC’s high tempo offense. If Clowney can’t do it, do you really think WKU can? In the words of the great Wilson Wilson Wilson, “I don’t think so Tim.”
UK will win 38-24. I think the Cats are going to Win by 90, but I have to give WKU a little credit; my cousin ain’t that bad of an OC.
A Side Note
For those that love to bring out their pitch forks every time I mention my high school alma mater, explaining to me how bad 2-A football is, YOU CAN ALL SHUT YOUR FREAKING MOUTHS. With my younger bro manning the QB position for DeSales, the Colts knocked off Matt Elam and John Hardin 25-20 last night. The #10 prospect in the nation took his first loss in the regular season in his career, snapping a 43 game regular season winning streak. With 16 seconds left, a John Hardin WR caught a pass inside the ten, making it down to the 3 before fumbling it into the end zone, with DeSales recovering. Call me a homer, but I can’t help it that I like to give little bro blue some pub, especially when he did it by taking down the state’s top dog.
