Mashburn will be honored at the SEC Tournament

Jamal Mashburn has been named a 2013 SEC Basketball Legend by the fine people at All-State.  Monster Mash will be introduced during halftime of Kentucky’s first game in the SEC Tournament, which will hopefully be on Friday and not Wednesday or Thursday.

On a related note, Nashville is going to be a blast.  Big Blue Nation will take over the city, like we always do, and the tournament could determine whether or not Kentucky makes the the field of 68 — but let’s hope it doesn’t come down to that.

Congrats to Mashburn and Go Cats.

Just seeing Mashburn in a UK uniform and how he played the game makes my disgust of the current batch all the more profound.

  2. Memories

I agree…Mashburn is still the best to wear the blue and white in my lifetime. Could play all five positions on the floor. Dominated the “Fab Five” and Him fouling out in both the Duke and Michigan games cost us at least one championship. We miss you Monster Mash!!

  3. SEC tournament

do you think they will let us in the sec tournament?

Mashburn’s entire freshman season stats: 12.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg. Very similar to what Poythress has done so far. Boy, imagine how bad some of you would have ripped him had KSR been around then!

Hey look….he is driving AND passing.

BTW…2 things about Poythress: he is not getting the minutes like others and that keeps his averages down. If he played 30 minutes, he would likely be a double-double guy. However…he gets in foul trouble and he does not seem to be in good shape. Last night I saw where he was tapping his head (a sign that he is winded and needs to come out) after only about 3 minutes of play.

Do you think they’ll let Mash suit up? He still has one year of eligiblity left right?

I advise Cats fans to only book a one-night stay in Nashville.

  8. Oh Yeah

Nashville’s going to lose a LOT of $$$ on this SEC Tournament.

We probably won’t hear Cal say that the SEC Tournament is unimportant and wish that we didn’t have to play in it this year. We will probably need to make it to the Finals to make the Big tournament.

  10. UK Fan

This UK squad most likely will lose to Florida 3 times this season.

Could Cal… i know he probably could get access to it. Find some highlights of Mashburn in his days at Kentucky and force Poythress to watch them for hours?

    Miss these uniforms.

  13. Randy Marsh

I really wish my memory of UK basketball could reach the days of Mash. From all I’ve heard, he was a bad man. My first vivid memory of the ‘Cats is of playing Arkansas sometime in the 1994-1995 season

I was blessed to be a student at UK when Mash landed on campus. A man among Kentucky boys. Blue collar, get it done kind of player. Not a lot of emotion because he was just taking care of business. Check out the Wikipedia page for Mash – interesting info about his pro career. One of only 6 NBA players to average 20+ points/game in his last season – others are players like West, Bird, Jordan, Petrovic’. Apparently he is quite the business man these days – he planned well for post-NBA! Would love to see him honored at the SEC tourney.

Class act. Gave me a shoe after one of his preseason games when he played for Dalls. If not for injuries guy could have been a multiple time all-star and maybe hall of famer. It was unreal all the different injuries to hit this guy in the NBA. Nice to see him get this award. Pippen probably still remembers the day Mash put 50 on him and the mighty Bills. Congrats Jamal, you always will be my favorite player. Folks he came to UK when other big names would not because of our probation. He was Pitinos first big name and helped get UK back to the top.

When Mash played, players across the country the country said in the low post the two most feared players were Shaq and Mash. They were the strongest by far and could move anybody. And it’s true, of not for the tic tac foul in ot against Michigan we had a good shot at winning it all that year. The fab five couldn’t run or jump, they were so tired. Mash was having his way in ot until the bullcrap foul. Mashburn is in my top three players of all time for our cats. Kyle Macy was my first uk hero but Mash, Antoine Walker, and Anthony Davis are my top three in no particular order. We have been blessed with two of the top five best teams in college basketball in history. 95-96 and 11-12. And we had some other great teams as well. During our down yrs such as this one I always found someone on the team to love to watch even in the losses. This yr I’ve really enjoyed Noel And Harrow. Everyone knows how well Noel is doing but I think Harrow is being overlooked a bit. Go Cats!!!!
