2013 big man Julius Randle recently suffered a fracture in his right foot, ending his season. Randle, one of Kentucky’s remaining targets for the 2013 class, is still considering the Cats, along with Texas, Kansas, North Carolina State, Florida and Oklahoma. Many analysts have said that Randle favors homestate Texas, but his recruitment has been notoriously hard to read. In fact, the only certainties in Randle’s recruitment come from Randle himself, who writes a blog for USA Today’s high school website.
In his latest entry, Randle writes about his injury, which he sustained during a game over Thanksgiving break. The injury ended his season, but Randle vows to be back on the court as soon as possible. Naturally, all of the coaches recruiting him reached out once they heard about his fractured foot, including Coach Cal. Writes Randle:
I had a really good talk with Coach (John) Calipari since my injury too. He’s funny. He told me that worst-case scenario, if I never play again, I could still come to Kentucky on scholarship and after I graduate I’d be his assistant. The crazy thing is that I know he’s serious about that. It just showed me how much he really cared about me and my future. That meant a lot to me.
Knowing Cal as we do, he was totally being serious, Julius. Not everyone was so nice. Randle said that a UNC fan wrote him on Twitter after his injury, “cursing me out and telling me this happened because I cut them from my list.” Randle laughed it off, but stay classy, Tarheels.
Randle will visit NC State on January 26th, Texas on February 9th and Kansas on February 16th.
