James Joyce’s Tuesday Notes

joyce

I am still sick, but that doesnt mean we cant stop to honor the birthday of the greatest author no one would ever actually read, James Joyce. Ask any Lit professor or graduate student what was the greatest novel of the 20th century and they will likely say “Ulysses”, “Finnegan’s Wake” or one of the other Joyce classics. Ask them to tell you why they are great and you will get a treatise on various themes, use of language, etc, all of which came out of their graduate school professor’s mouth in class or some lit critic’s study on Joyce. The truth that none of them will ever admit is that no one really reads Joyce and those that say he is their favorite author are either (a) lying or (b) crazy. Reading Joyce is like listening to Bobby Maze speak…you need a translator and you come away more confused than when you began. He is allegedly the greatest author of modern times, but I can admit to having never finished one of his works. Today would have been his 127th birthday, and pretentious types on college campuses everywhere are likely toasting their cappucino glasses in admiration.

To the notes:

— The story of the day was the supposed discontent between Wall and Calipari, a showcase that was more illlustrative of the practice of modern media than a statement about the two individuals. For their part, Wall and Calipari dealt with the 2 day old story by saying it was no biggie and that Wall expressed frustration that was taken out of context. The media took 48 hour old news, hopped on each other’s backs in a slow news day and tried to have something to talk about in he meantime. Notorious Calipari critics like Pat Forde and Pete Thamel took a clueless Jimmy Dykes quote, ran with it and all of a sudden the story was the 2nd lead on PTI. In the end, the PTI guys were correct…it was nothing and we can all move on. But the next time you read “explosive” news about other teams, remember this issue and note that it could be the case that they are as wrong about those issues as they were this one.

— Also, Coach Calipari made everyone excited when he announced that new uniforms are coming next week for the Cats, likely to debut against Tennessee for Gameday. My guess is that we will see a good dose of black in the new uniforms to go with the new Lebron shoes. I hope the Blue and White traditionalists are ready if that ends up being the case.

— Recruiting is the hot topic everywhere as The Cats Pause hired someone with a Louisville Cardinals line beard (and a great last name) to be their new recruiting guy. He did an interview with Marquis Teague in which he said nothing, but confirmed that the big three (UK, UL and IU) still lead for his services. The big news came from Jeff Drummond of Kentucky Ink, who did a story on Brandon Knight and Knight says he is close to a decision. The 2010 Point Guard is THE most important recruit for UK this Spring and if he makes the decision to come to Lexington, the ball just keeps right on rolling next year. A decision may come soon apparently and it is likely the final two will be Kentucky and Florida, although UCONN and Miami hope to play a part as well.

— If you havent seen the new Seth Davis show on CBS College Sports, you ought to watch it. Yes Seth Davis can annoy us all, but it is a good roundup of college basketball and Seth is a good interviewer….although the good doctor Jerry Tipton was one guest tonight. Davis will be at the UK-Ole Miss game tonight and I am sure to harass him about podcasts at some point.

Signing Day is Wednesday and things dont look great on the Cats front. Tim Patterson is scheduled to make a decision on Wednesday between Kentucky and Louisville, but the buzz in Louisville is that the Cards may have closed strong to get the pickup. Miles Simpson is another Kentucky kid that the Cats want, but Jody Demling reports tonight that some believe Indiana is the leader with two days to go. The Cats need to close strong…we shall see if it happens.

— On “The Bachelor”, Scott Padgett moved on to the Final Four, ensuring that Kentucky will get to the Big Dance one way or the other this year. Vienna Padgett has all the moves necessary, combined with a dash of crazy, to stay to the end of the hottest reality show in the KSR Compound.

— If you havent yet, scroll down and read Beisner’s piece on the National Player of the Year prospects for Boogie. Beisner makes a strong case that Cousins should be in the mix and that his numbers compare very favorably to past winners who were big men.

Matt Pilgrim and Marshall Moses almost got into a fight on their bench tonight during the Oklahoma State-Texas game. Both guys have Kentucky connections and could very well have been teammates here if things had gone a bit differently. Tonight shows why things worked out well for Kentucky on both ends (even though I do think Marshall was a Top 5 KSR podcast guest ever).

— If you havent listened to Episode 13 of the Podcast, please do. It is a good look at the life of a UK basketball player with Michael Porter and a lot of absurdity that we enjoyed producing. Aslo, please subscribe to the KSR Podcast on iTunes if you get a chance. We got up to #3 on the National sports rankings today just behind PTI and Bill Simmons. We appreciate all your support as we try to get Drew Franklin a job.

We will have more all day as we get ready for tonight’s 7 pm start against Ole Miss. Stay tuned….

OK I may not be the smartest commentor on here but I just want to clarify something I have been afraid to ask…
Scott Padgett is not really on The Bachelor, right???

  3. My Wife's Feet

What is “The Bachelor?” Seriously?? Is that a new TV show or something?

  4. Shane

2- Wondering the exact same thing.. Glad you asked before me! lol

  5. hq

R these new jerseys just going to b alternate type deals likr the black ones last year or r they totally just the new jerseys?

  6. catfansice1970

yeah whats up with this padgett on the bachelor. i asked that before but didnt get an answer.

  7. KY12

Scott Padgett is married with kids.

  8. GoCats2

Its an inside joke. There is a Padgett lookalike on the Bachelor apparently.
While we are discussing inside jokes, can anyone tell me the Darius Miller’s buddies story?

  9. High

its a chick that looks like Scott Padgett. Her name is Vienna.

  10. Basteballer

    The chick looks like Scott.

  11. CatFan

Joker is really struggling in his first recruiting class. I’m waiting until after signing day before I flip out, but it looks like he has missed out on every important recruit UK was targeting. Better do something before wednesday Joker.

  12. Brooklyn

Just like one needs a Sherpa to help climb some of the steeper mountains, sometimes one needs a guide to be led through some of the more dense literature that’s out there… and while I’ve never made it through a Joyce novel myself, I bet there are plenty of professors who could walk just about anyone through and make the thing come alive. Not sure what’s pretentious about that.

  13. Ane Ode to Boogie

Just in case Big Popi Cuz is a night owl:

With a swag as pure as Peter Parker,
and a game that fits his name.
Your the type of person and a player,
    to bring Lexington the fame.

Backing down the opponent in the block,
    is where your needed most.
we can see you juke your mans jock,
when we are going coast to coast.

We know the miles are many,
from your family you are apart.
    Understand one thing thats plenty,
is the love in a UK fans heart.

For a team with so much talent,
and a coach not far from great.
We’ll need you when we reach our peak,
    Thats right, it’s title eight.

So you chose to rep our state,
may God be with you here.
But to see you maximize your skillz,
    Calipari’s blue you wear.

  14. GoCats2

12)I need a guide to be lead through your comment, I didn’t make it.

  15. GoCats2

13)you gotta be f–king kidding me.

  16. CatFan

13.) Damn man! I wish someone would knock your punk A$$ out and break your computer.

  17. KY12

I heard Boogie read your poem, you can stop now. Oh and I heard he didn’t like it either.

  18. soaringeagle22

Joyce is awful. He takes stream-of-consciousness way overboard, and leaves readers completely clueless. I mean, “Ulysses” is basically a 1000 page book about one day through they eyes of one man.

Also, Boogie is good, but I don’t really think he can claim Player of the Year unless he’s able to reduce his fouls and stay on the court more than 21 minutes a game. When he’s in the game he’s always the best big man on the court, but if he’s only in the game half the time he is less effective.

  19. Chris Collinsworth

I think that jacket is made from old worn out rug.

  20. WorthlessEnglishDegree

Read Joyce’s collection of short stories called “Dubliners” if you want to familiarize yourself with his work without having to read “Ulysses” or “Finnegans Wake.” “Araby” is my personal favorite of the collection.

  22. KY12

I prefer the mysterious yet provocative approach to literature taken by the under appreciated R.L. Stine.

  23. GoCats2

20)I hope you have an Art History Minor to fall back on.

  24. Shane

    13- This is just ludicrous

  25. Alamo_CatFan

8 – Basically, during a game earlier this year Darius had a great block and one of the announcers said “that’s one he can tell his buddies about” or something close to that. Dumb as dirt as usual…I’m sure he was texting Jodie during the next time out.

  26. CatFanForLife

    22. Seconded. R.L Stine is a master of the literary yarn. A true scholar, and a gentleman of unmatched wit…

  27. BPsycho

    Caitlin Upton .. mmmmmmmmmm

    Pilgrim is a beast.

  29. Ane Ode to Boogie

    24- You are just skee-lo.

  30. UK fan

Anybody read this Steve Jones guys article on Knight? I wonder if he even mentioned Drummond is where he heard this

  31. KY12

Ghost Beach ventures into the soul, offering suspenseful perspective into the human experience. The framework he uses allows the reader to transcend the boundaries of imagination and live vicariously through the protagonist.

  32. UKcat8fan

I bet mm’s crazies asked about Knight and summed it up to, “thats nothing we dont know” lol

  33. UKcat8fan

Where did Cal say we are gettin new uni news ?? Link

  34. BPsycho

#14 When you think you have done it already, you can have it. In the land of nowhere your guide will follow the meek…

  39. BPsycho

    #35 And another thing!

He clearly stated he did not know if Boogie was a candidate for POTY. He set that whole post up for debate in the comment section. Your lack of reading comprehension amazes me and makes me lol muahahhahaha

    /joke

  40. Jerry Tipton

I have always admired James Joyce because, even though deep down he loved the Catholic Church and his hometown, he always found a way to write something negative about both of them.

  41. Kansas Cat

41–Well put. The pretentious among us laugh.

  42. Honest Injun

Doesn’t WLAP know that most people listen to sports radio in their car…and that it is dangerous to put a sports talk show on the air that might dull drivers to sleep? Now that the team is exciting again…..bring back Tirey and Big Trace!! Hell even bring on Matt Jones with them a few times a week. A hard working host and a genius producer packed along with the KSR loyals and Big Blue Nation….. email WLAP and tell them you need an entertaining show that will match the intensity of our beloved Cats…not monotone news guy that knows his stuff but wraps his gift in newspaper clippings. (no offense Dick…but your outta touch and unbareably boring) Bring back the talent WLAP and stop being small market chumps afraid that you will get outshined by your “part-timers”. yeah…im bitter.

  43. Andrew

Read A Portrait of The Artist As A Young Man, it’s brillant. And you know Calipari’s meeting with Wall really went something like this is. hahaha

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fuDDqU6n4o

  44. Shane

29- notice how i said “this is ludicrous” and not “you are ludacris”… so in your attempt to call me skee-lo is an epic fail

Antoine Walker’s Wiki page just went from:

    Pre-NBA Career

Walker attended Mount Carmel High School, where he played with Philadelphia Eagles starting Quarterback Donovan McNabb and attained all-state status as a senior, earning a full scholarship to play for Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky. He was a starting forward on the Wildcats’ 1996 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship-winning team. As a freshman at Kentucky he was named SEC Tournament MVP. In his sophomore year Antoine was named All-SEC First, All-SEC Tournament and to the All-NCAA Regional Teams.

Antoine, or “Toine’ as he is often lovingly referenced, was perhaps the first UK player to bring the phenomenon of “bust a move” to the forefront of Kentucky basketball. Walker’s use of shoulder shwagging to emphasize a dominant beat-down continues even today, with periodic fan appearances of local celebrity Darren Moscoe, “the dancing guy at Rupp”. However, the 2009 arrival of the celebrated #1 recruit and future NBA superstar John Wall delivered an even greater exhibition of rhythm and body control, capable of sequestering the attention of the greatest nation on the planet whenever he chooses, Wall showcased moves worthy of anyone from Baryshnikov to MC Hammer.

Good change if I may say so myself…

    Who is Steve Jones?

  49. crazydave

If the new uniforms ara mostly black, then we might as well put a D in the front and an E in the back.

  50. MattO

So, I know I’m only one of 10 people in the world who actually own a Zune, but is there any chance you can get the podcast up on the Zune store? If not, can you point me towards a link so that I can add it to my Zune’s podcast page?

  51. swampbreath

what the hell is wrong with simpson? INDIANA?

  52. Socks in the box

Has anyone heard anything about the new unis having the pattern on the back like Duke’s? I really hope not but I’m afraid that’s what will happen.

PS- I hope Lebron brought Boogie some Lebron headbands so he can ditch the Jordan.

  53. Badinage

Is this a disappointing recruiting class in football? If so, why? Compared to?

  54. SavannahCat

My bet is Wall will be #1 pick in the draft and Cousins #2. Cousins should be in the mix for POY if UK ends up wining the SEC and SEC tourny and he continues to dominate. The bad thing about that is he and Wall will take votes away from each other. Wait, it doesn’t matter, neither plays for Duke, so they are not eligible for POY.

  55. Mojo Wilkins

So can the Padgett Bachelor chick stroke the three?

  56. The Big Harv

The Cat’s Pause guy with the line beard is a former Anderson County Bearcat. He is the brother of my best friend from high school. He is a blue-blooded UK grad and fan, so expect some good stuff from him.

  57. actually

i don’t think Vienna Padgett can stroke the 3 … but i hear she can really work the post

  58. Carolina Blue is past tense for CAROLINA BLOWS

I am ticked if the NCAA goes to 96 teams. I am glad that UNC and AZ are doing bad and was hoping at the beginnig of the season that both would miss the tourny. With our boys missing last year, it ended our consecutive appearance record and with the expansion to 96 teams, they would be included. Stupid idea.

  59. KSR Spy

    #59-Nice!

  60. KSR Spy

    Nice!!

  61. Justin

    59 – well played!

  62. UKgirlinNC

I watch the Bachelor during commercial breaks of House and “24”…guess that makes me a closet watcher but Vienna Padgett is just awful…the Bachelor needs some KSR input on who to choose since he is doing an awful job! (Ali is my pick) And…regarding the game tonite…GO CATS!!!

  63. BUWildcat10

let me guess, Joyce was a flaming Liberal wasn’t he??!!!! LOL jk

  64. Gas Station Employee

Gordon Street? Ah, yes, Gordon Street. I once knew a girl who lived on Gordon Street. Long time ago, when I was a young man. Not a day passes I don’t think her and the promise that I made which I will always keep. That one perfect day on Gordon Street. That’s uh, five blocks up, two over.

  65. BUWildcat10

64 whoever he picks is just going to dump him anyway..all those girls are playing that fool!! Honestly, I guess you could say the dude fits the physical profile of a “bachelor” (no homo!) but personality wise, the guy is a big LOSER!

  66. boxhead

    66 – Caasaandraaaaaaa!!!

  67. DenimJerseys

Completley new uniforms. Supposed to be similar to USA and Dukes, with the tribal print.

  68. asdfasdf

“Araby” is solid, as is Dubliner’s

  69. update

    NEW UNIS!!!!!!! for Gameday–get PUMPED

  70. UKgirlinNC

#67 – You are right…he has no personality! Guess no one can be like our KSR guys – quick witted, handsome (except for some hair styles), successful…

  71. ebell55

Get off Jokers back! Last year he got Cobble and Wilson out off Central they will be major factors before they leave UK! Two out of three aint bad! I bet this class will rank better than 2 of our last 4! Who cares about recruiting rankings give me results on the field!

  72. DerbyDemon

#13–Your poem sucked yesterday and it still sucks today.

I’m gonna make that headband my B*tch!!!!
This is out of left field, but anyone heard that song Kentucky by Afroman?
I can’t get DeMarcus to QUIT playing it! “I’m gonna find me a girrrrrl from Kentucky….”

  76. UKclam

Joyce was a “high modernist,” like T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and others. As such, he didn’t care if 99% of the populace understood what he wrote, because he aimed for the 1% of the readers who were in to avant garde literature. I’m not saying he is the greatest writer, but he realized most people didn’t have the literary background or intellectual skills to understand what he was writing and would thus assume he was a “bad” writer.

  77. KY-TN Aggie

    78) she said, “I’ll fry some chicken…”

  78. BPsycho

#46 Yes sir, I indeed noticed what you really meant. BUT I was baiting for an Efight!
