In Living Color’s Halloween News and Views

in-living-color

There’s a lot from the early 90′s to be nostalgic for: day-glo fashion, “Saved by the Bell,” the Chicago Bulls, Giga Pets…I could go on and on. But one of the best parts of the early 90′s was “In Living Color.” FOX’s edgy urban sketch comedy was off-the-wall and absolutely hilarious, spawning the careers of such stars as Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier, Keenen Ivory Wayans (the show’s creator) and yes, even J. Lo. Recently, Matt and company discussed their favorite “In Living Color” sketches on the radio show, bringing up such gems as Homey Don’t Play That, Wanda, Men On Film, Fire Marshall Bill, etc. etc. Clearly the executives at FOX heard that show, because this weekend, they announced that they are bringing In Living Color back for two half-hour specials next spring. Two snaps up!

Before I throw together a Fly Girl costume at the last minute in tribute, let’s go over the news of the weekend:

- We’ve rehashed the painful loss to Mississippi State all day, but before we turn the page, here are a few things that stood out to me after watching the Cats in person for the second time this season.

This team seems determined to take one step forward and then two steps back. The offense squandered each opportunity the defense created for them, most notably turning two huge turnovers by the defense into a pair of field goals. If the Cats had scored a touchdown on either of those possessions, the momentum swing would have been huge. Instead, the playcalling continues to be more conservative than Mitch Barnhart’s wardrobe. Case and point: Joker’s decision to kick a field goal instead of going for a touchdown on 4th and 6 in the third quarter when the Cats were down 21-6. Tell me how that’s the attitude of a coach that wants to win. If your opponent is up by touchdowns and you keep scoring field goals, odds are you won’t be able to catch up, even if you have Auto MacIntosh.

However, there was one thing to keep fans from leaving the stadium completely depressed: the promising play of Maxwell Smith. Smith stepped in for an injured Morgan Newton, and got the offense moving the best it has all season. Smith was far from perfect, but he looked like a leader on the field and the offense actually found a groove under his direction. From the preseason on, the coaching staff has been very high on Smith (with Randy Sanders saying that he has “as much arm talent as any quarterback I’ve ever worked with” last night), and for him to step in and get a stagnant offense in sync against the 17th best pass defense in the country is something. A telling statistic: in UK’s first three SEC games, Morgan Newton completed 26 of 74 passes; on Saturday night, Maxwell Smith completed 26 of 33. Bring on the quarterback controversy. Newton is listed as day-to-day, but Joker said in his teleconference today that the two will compete for the starting job in practice this week. Joker also didn’t rule out the possibility of playing both quarterbacks, which usually never works and may have made me throw up in my mouth a little. So, are you Team Maxwell or Team Newton?

In other football news, Joker announced that Donte Rumph is expected to play against Ole Miss after hyperextending his knee on Saturday night.

- Let’s turn the page to basketball, shall we? Cal and the Cats put in two practices on Sunday, and per usual, the practice notes are up on CoachCal.com. The Cats did walk-throughs in the morning and scrimmaged in the afternoon, and on Sunday, it was Michael Kidd-Gilchrist stealing the show. K-G dominated from the start, setting the tempo with seven quick points and not letting up. When his play in the paint became too much for the White team to handle, they packed the lane to try to contain him. His response? He moved to the three arc and knocked shots down from there. Here’s a tasty morsel, courtesy of Eric Lindsey:

Cal’s description of Kidd-Gilchrist after he got pinned by Davis, got the ball back and took it right back at Davis for a layup: “Wow, that kid just doesn’t stop. When you block it, he doesn’t give up. You better kick, push and shove to get the ball from him because if you don’t, you’re not getting the ball from him.”

Be sure to go check out the full report from practice on CoachCal.com. You won’t regret it.

- Need another reason to get excited for this season? Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted today that he spoke to an NBA scout who has been sitting in on UK practices who said that Anthony Davis was the “most talented, most complete” freshman big man he’s seen in a decade. #FeartheBrow

- Two bits of 2013 recruiting news to report. 2013 PF Chris Walker tweeted that he will visit Lexington for the Kentucky/North Carolina game on December 3rd. Walker is a five-star prospect whose recruitment has been a bit bumpy so far. He originally intended to visit for Big Blue Madness but went to Kansas’ Midnight Madness instead. Reports say his visit to Kansas went very well, but there’s a game to knock his socks off, it will be UK/UNC.

- It was reported today that 2013 five-star PG Kasey Hill has an offer from the Cats, along with Florida, Florida State, Louisville, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and USF. Cal recently spoke to Hill, and is encouraging him to visit campus soon. I hear something’s going on December 3rd.

- Know who also might visit for the UK/UNC game? Shabazz Muhammad. Today, his father told the Los Angeles Times he doesn’t have a leader yet. Boo.

- Congrats to the women’s volleyball team, who knocked off #13 Florida today. The ladies, ranked 24th in the country, dominated the 5th set to win the match and told me to tell you they really appreciate all the nice things you say about their uniforms.

- It’s a big week around these parts, with the radio show finally debuting in Lexington and KSTV’s nightly one-minute commentaries airing on WKYT. Combine that with Kentucky’s first exhibition game against Transy on Wednesday and you have the recipe for a pretty awesome week. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of the early favorite in the KSR Halloween Costume Contest:
