Davis family to sue Chicago Sun-Times

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the lawyer for Anthony Davis’ family will file a lawsuit next week against the Chicago Sun-Times and reporter Michael O’Brien for publishing two reports claiming the family had a financial deal in place for their son’s commitment.  According to the Tribune story (found here), the Davis family attorney said the claims were “baseless” and were “defamation of character and very harmful”.  He also said that they advised the paper that publishing anything of the sorts would force them to file a lawsuit in order to clarify.

Get your popcorn ready.  Especially if there are actually three basketball coaches giving the information to O’Brien.  I just hope they have to settle for, umm, $200,000 or so.

    This can’t end well.

  3. tdogg4033011

Does everyone outside the state of Ky hate us that much?? Or is it just jealousy
Calipari already has Gilchrist & Teague coming, that they wanted to try to keep him
from landing Davis as well?? I love haters ….

  4. bleedblue23

The sh*t done hit the fan.

  5. No! It's Mingue, MORON

So glad to hear this. Someone needs to be made an example of. You don’t just blindly publish baseless reports for the sake of hits and get away with it.

  6. tdogg4033011

man ….. I dont even know why I stopped in there, but some people on TCP
message board are ignorant. Stop recruiting Davis because of the
rumor?? Give me a break, thats why it happened

  7. GoCats2010

    6. tcp board people pay to post their god-awful opinions…I post my nonsense for free

  8. tdogg4033011

    7) I hear that man, I’m pretty satisfied with KSR. Don’t get any better IMO.
You makin it out to fan day tomorrow??

  9. BTIs_RA

Ok… while I don’t believe this accusation one bit… does anybody else worry that CST re-posted the article because there is some truth to it? I’m not saying that we did anything wrong… but I’ll be honest, I am holding my breath to some degree…

  10. TexasCatFan54

    9. I don’t think UK would have denied the article twice and threatened to sue if any of the article was true. If it is true, why would they have brought more attention to it?

  11. ReleasetheSquirms

Jurich/Pitino is behind this, no doubt in my mind.

  12. Kentucky14

9, to me the fact that the family is filing a lawsuit is the biggest evidence against the CST report. If Davis Sr knows that he asked about money and thus there really are three sources that are being used for this article, then why sue? A lawsuit is the way for more information to actually come out if there was any truth. If he asked for money and the article is correct then he would just continue to deny the reports. A lawsuit seems to indicate to me that he has nothing to hide.

  13. pccatsfan

    9) Do you honest to God think there is ANY chance that anyone connected to UK paid $200k for this kid? Come on!! Show a little more respect and faith. I think the ST published the 2nd article as a strategic move to try to protect their credibility. They were getting hammered by the national journalists for the 1st piece of trash they published. If UK and the Davis family don’t sue, then the ST can stand by their 2nd story. If someone does sue, they will just try to divert the blame to their 3 “credible” sources. It will be very interesting to see if we learn which 3 schools made up this crap.

  14. pccatsfan

And it may be that their sources are only very loosely connected to a school. Hell they could be relying on some info from some 12 year old who has his own blog site. Or whose aunt said something and she happens to work in the library at the school.

  15. NotTheSlickistRick

Hopefully Eric Bledsoe’s family will follow this example and sue over the release of his HS transcripts.

Cat fans are going to be in for a treat!

Erin D. is winning! Triathlete hottie who is a Cat fan told me she will pose in a Kentucky shirt aka Ashley Judd if she wins.

She’s winning, thanks to final surge the last 2 days (most likely the work of the Big Blue Nation). Let’s put it out of the park one and for all!

Vote one more time for Erin D.! Big thanks in advance…

17- just voted. hope she wins

Boy the sun-times had this blow up in their faces. haha (nelson from the simpsons)
UK comes out lookin good and will also get davis. when UK released the 2nd letter saying they will support the player’s family, it all but nailed down davis’s committment.

  19. kentuckyjoe

Okay, now it’s UK’s turn to file their lawsuit. And if they don’t, then I’m be very disappointed. This crap needs to be met with full force and fury.

  20. coachholland

    9. While I don’t think there’s any chance that anyone at UK or anyone officially associated with the University paid anything to the family, you can’t 100% discount the notion that some overzealous moron out there paid the Davis’. We constantly bring up the UMass Camby situation. Camby wasn’t paid by Calipari or anyone at UMass, but an outside influence ruined things for them. Memphis and Calipari had nothing to do with SAT scores, but it’s possible someone else helped him become eligible.

I don’t think the story has legs and don’t think it’s true, but there are plenty of idiots out there that could ruin things for UK that are out of the compliance office’s control.

  21. nassau65

    19. I totally agree. I think it would be money well spent. I’d even donate to the cause, as i’m sure most fans would. It’s time to put a stop to this BS.

  22. pccatsfan

    20) Please take a position. Any statement that includes “but” isn’t a position. (I think X, but I also think Y.) You are arguing both sides. If the Davis family does file a suit, that is a very strong indication there is no truth to these accusations. So it would seem that there was no overzealous moron involved.

  23. Calipari'sInYourEar

#20 – coachholland – Regarding the comparison to Camby at UMASS, all the more reason this is good that the Davis family decided to sue.

    This tells us:
    1) They have a clean slate… or
    2) They are crazy

Either way, since Davis is a 2011 player, this lawsuit will either clear his name or destroy it for good.

How does that effect Kentucky? Well, since this lawsuit will go through the ringer way before Davis ever plays a game for UK (over 1 year away) Kentucky will either have a verified clean player put on the jersey or a tainted player have his scholarship retracted.

If the 2nd scenario happens, UK would have no games to be forfeited or major violations to suffer from since it wouldn’t have been prior to his time “with” the University. Remember, the kid hasn’t even verbally committed to any one.

We all know UK or Cal didn’t pay this kid. Is it possible that an independant booster did? Yea, its possible, but again, UK without knowledge of that, would be much cleaner in the NCAA’s eyes than UMASS or even the Memphis football situation over a decade ago.

  24. Calipari'sInYourEar

I’m hoping that Davis wins the lawsuit and is granted exactly $200,000 in compensatory damamges.

Wouldn’t that be a fitting resolution.

  25. pccatsfan

    24) I’m with you, but hope the amount is more like $400k, so the lawyer gets their 50% and the Davis family still gets $200k. That would be fitting.

  26. macon_volfan

I just hope he takes some of the $200K to get a wax on that uni-brow. Wow. That brow almost/ makes Tyus’ forehead look normal.

  27. gcat4496

In the trial the “sources” will be called to the stand. It will be interesting to see who the “Sources” are. My quess of
sources: Rick Pitino, Rick Pitino Jr. Pat Forde, Jerry Tipton, Dana O’neil..etc.

  28. NotTheSlickistRick

    Macon Leave that brow alone

    Fear the unibrow!!

  29. SexnNursinHomes

26- yeah, cuz nothing spells classy like a Tyler Smith tattooed tear drop. :)

  30. macon_volfan

#29- tear drop tat > unibrow < my hairy belly < Chism’s headband

  31. NotTheSlickistRick

    30) Macon you are Killing it today, but you could have gone all year without mentioning your belly. I had that picture completely out of my mind.
    DAMN YOU VOLs

  32. Ken_Kays_lil_bro

    13) You hit the nail on the head… The CST obviously isn’t backing down because all they have to do is put the blame on the three “sources”… They posted the article knowing that it wasn’t going to come back on them… The CST won’t be held responsible for the information in the article. The blame will be placed on the “three sources”.. NOW, here is the real question… (((WHO are the three sources)))??? It’s most likely going to be someone that is PI$$ED at Cal for getting the best recruits in the country and they know they can’t beat UK anytime in the near future. If they are expected to win or sit on the hot seat, this is the best way to attack Cal.. My three guesses are 1)UL…. 2)UT…. 3)UNCDUKE :)

  33. echo 1

32 – The original article may have been pulled, but it has gone viral on the internet. Just because they pulled it from their website, doesn’t mean it wasn’t posted. If I was that tabloid paper, I would be more concerned about the first article. They never printed a retraction. They simply pulled it, printed some pansy bio article, then came back with a new inflammatory article. They may think they covered their butt, but the first article did the most damage to The Davis family.

  34. macon_volfan

#32-If UT can beat UK with 5 first round picks, I think that they can win in the near future with some of the talent they have coming in as well. Pearl always schemes well vs. Cal coached teams, so look for the Vols to split regular season games with UK for the foreseeable future.

Regarding you allegation, Pearl has turned in cheats before, but I don’t think he had anything to do with Davis. The Vols weren’t even in the picture for Davis. The blame probably lies either with a school that is also recruiting Davis, or to no one because there are not three sources. I’m leaning towards the latter.

  35. bluetexan

A LAWSUIT??? Don’t tell BTI – it’ll ruin his day…when this first appeared and the BBN was shocked/amazed…he chided those on here who wanted the University to take legal action of ‘over-reaction’. My best wishes to the Davis family- the Sun-Times may find that $200,000 will just be a ‘starting point’…

  36. echo 1

34 – Let’s see. macon comes here, insults a UK recruit on a UK board, then gets defensive when someone says something about UT (again, on a UK board)? Yeah, that makes sense.

  37. charlesl22 Hard Hittin' Cat

just when one fascinating trial ends, the potential for another ramps up. Hells to the yeah! Lawsuits all around, homeboys!

  38. catbalue

I think the whole deal was a set up from the git go. It was if they wanted to get sued to get the publicity associated so they could keep the story going. Seems like a bunch of morons to me.

  39. Blasphemy

Macon, ty for supporting us in our dark with promises that UT likely split the series with us each year. Seriously though, are you a UK fan when UK is not playing UT?

  40. Blasphemy

    ….in our dark **hour** with…..

  41. Blasphemy

I wish there was an edit button sometimes…….

  42. Calipari'sInYourEar

#34 – macon_volfan – lmao… Tennessee’s days of Football and Basketball success are but a distant memory chum.

UT will not compete with UK teams from here on out. UT players quit when the wrench is turned, and Cal knowns it. UT won’t be within 12 at the end of either game.

Then Kiffin’s legacy will sting for the next 3 years with the NCAA getting ready to pinch those hostesses lil cute asses and Fulmer will end up being the one that got away.

  43. BravoBigBlue

36 – I echo your sentiments. But don’t be too harsh on “The Mascot”.

  44. macon_volfan

#39-it depends. I cheer for the SEC always against non-conference. I have to admit that I giggled when UK lost to horrible teams (like VMI) during the BCG ‘era’. I wouldn’t consider myself a UK fan, though. I ‘hate’ UK like any good UT fan should. Of course, that doesnt’ cloud my judgment of people like it does some fans. It’s all in good fun.

I don’t care for Cal as a coach, but that is more of a Memphis thing than a UK thing. I do like how he gives back to the community, which anyone blessed with tons of money and influence should.

  45. BravoBigBlue

    39 – In 5 words or less: “That’s a big ‘No’.”

  46. macon_volfan

#42- I certainly think that UT football will struggle for a few years. Fulmer’s lack of recruiting at the end of his tenure + Kiffin= a tough few years. I believe it will turn around, but I expect a UK-esque football season for the Vols for at least 2 years. I will be happy if the Vols play in Nashville or Memphis come December. In fact, if that happens, I think Dooley should be considered for SEC coach of the year.

Regarding UT basketball, to say that their best years are a distant memory is simply asinine. Next year could, potentially be as good as last year or even better. Time will tell, but I think the Vols will be solid for at least the next 3 years. UT will win one and UK will lose one. I said that same thing last year, and everyone said I was stupid. Look at the Cal v Pearl history. When he was at Memphis, he had VASTLY superior talent to UT. UT had DANE BRADSHAW (6’4″) at power forward. POWER FORWARD. Cal never dominated then, and won’t now.

Am I saying that UT will do overall better than UK. No. That being said, a roster full of NBA first round players only went as far as a team that now has 3 seniors playing in Turkey next year…..

  47. macon_volfan

oh, and #36–I only repeated something that’s been said here a bunch of times, re: unibrow. If this kid chooses any school but UK, he’ll get Austin Powers’d to death on this board.

  48. Blasphemy

Macon, stop lying to yourself, you are ‘clearly’ a UK fan when you are locked in your house where nobody can see…… just whip out the UK hat every once and a while……… stop staying in the orange ‘closet’ all the time and ‘come out’ every now and then.

  49. BravoBigBlue

46 – Last year it was UK 2 VolSuck 1. And the 2nd UK win was kick-ass. But don’t let the facts get in the way.

  50. Calipari'sInYourEar

As long as Kanter is available UT will get thrashed. Mark that down with a Sharpie.

Without beanhead on the block you guys are done macon_bedpan.

  51. SexnNursinHomes

50- UT had to add a baby’s nursery to Thompson-Boling arena due to Tobias Harris’s abnormal crying and whining.

  52. CatInAshland

Anyone else think that the CST would not have printed anything at all derogatory about Davis and his family if he were going to an in-state school? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

  53. SexnNursinHomes

52- they could be the jerry tipton of the north.

  54. Calipari'sInYourEar

Seriously… UT doesn’t match up against us at all.

    PG Knight/Liggins………….Melvin Goins/ Trae Golden
    SG Lamb/Hood?……………..Scotty Hopson/ Jordan McRae
    SF Miller/Liggins/Poole…….Cameron Tatum/ Jordan McRae
    PF Jones/Vargas……………Tobias Harris/ Renaldo Woolridge/ Jeronne Maymon
    C Kanter/Harrellson………..Brian Williams/ Kenny Hall

    Hahahahahahaha!

  55. Calipari'sInYourEar

I’d say Calipari will put Liggins on Hopson all night long.

Where’s the points going to come from Macon_BedPan? Thrashed.

  56. Calipari'sInYourEar

What we don’t know is how well Knight, Lamb, Jones. I’d be willing to bet there’s a suprise in that group.

Liggins will be a momentum setting firecracker even more so this year than last to get his minutes.

  57. charlesl22 Hard Hittin' Cat

    56) What are the chances of Liggins gaining a starting role. I’m a big fan of his.

  58. echo 1

47 – Yeah, but it is a UK board. I seriously doubt anyone here goes to VolNation and trahses your recruits, then gets defensive when someone there says something about UK. I know I never would. I would deserve whatever I got if I did so.

  59. Calipari'sInYourEar

#57 – charlesl22 Hard Hittin’ Cat – I have to agree with the sentiments.

I’m a big fan of his as well – As long as he listens to Cal. I think Miller better bring it. Liggins will and should compete for the starting 3.

Being the best defender on the team, Liggins will have all kinds of assignments throughout the season which will mean large chunks of playing time.

I think Brandon Knight, Kanter, and Jones are locks. Lamb should be as well, but between the sharing time at the 3 with Miller, and no defined backups at the 1 or 2 Liggins will be an ace in the hole for our season to be as successful as it really can be.

  60. SagaciousMind

UT may have won, but then they got rolled in the SEC tourney. UT only beat UK cuz they played like they did when they lost games.

As for Davis, if anyone thinks he would seriously commit 200,000 to a player then those guys arent very intelligent for these reasons 1) that’s the biggest no no in the book 2) Cal already knows his every move is bein watched 3) even if someone pays a player i highly doubt it would be 200,000 4) he doesnt need Davis, yeah he wants him, but if his family was seriously askin for money, Cal has other options like Miller, O’Bryant and so forth 5) the #1 sf and #1 pg have already committed to UK so why would he need to pay anyone? If that’s the case, then that’s like questioning if he offered money to Gilchrist and Teague. And another thing that’s so disturbing…Davis hasnt committed to anywhere. And I feel that all this may deter him from making the commitment to UK if that’s what he planned to do…i hope not. Also, I’m pretty sure some coaches out there like to make up crap about other coaches and I would like to know which schools supposedly said he was asking for money.

  61. SagaciousMind

I saw Darius Miller last night at the movie tavern and he does not look like he needs to lose weight…so I dont know what the coaches are seeing

  62. macon_volfan

one quick point on that SEC semi-final game that you all keep bringing up, and this is a valid point…

UT was playing their third game in 3 days (due, in part, to the way the SEC seeds the tourney), and not until the mid way point of the second half did that game get out of hand. UT was down only 10 with 8:01 left in the game (50-40).

  63. jjol

I’m waiting for that big UK lawsuit. It ain’t comin. The truth is an absolute defense. Open up the books, KU. I’m sure a bunch of 100 dollar bills will fall out of files if you do.

Let’s talk directly. Email me here jolearylaw@yahoo.com

  64. BravoBigBlue

62 – Yes, won by ONLY 10 in 30 minutes. But guess what, they play 40 MINUTES. Valid point, my a$$.

  65. Quick Fiftino

    Lol @ ttool.

  66. jjol

The moderator of this board is a complete tool. I have no interest in talking directly.
