During an appearance on a Memphis program this morning, Coach Cal talked about college athletics and his ideas to change it and all of the other good nonsense that usually comes with those appearances. During the course of it, he touched on restrictions regarding phone calls and issued a line that launched a blog post at CBS and a million (that’s an estimate) re-Tweets about his ”shot” at Coach K.
So what was the scandalous line? Here it is….
“You have coaches getting fired over phone calls and texts messages – some. Other guys can make phone calls and it’s not that big of a deal.”
Kaboom? Eh, maybe not. I might have lofty standards for my trash-talking, but I’m a little underwhelmed by this. If Cal wanted to take shots, he’d take shots. That’s what he does and he doesn’t leave any room for interpretation. I know there’s a battle between the two coaches for Alex Poythress, who sits at the center of Coach K’s controversy, but I think we’ve all been around Cal long enough to know when he’s taking a shot. This line – no matter how awesome it might be – just doesn’t feel like it.
UPDATE: Cal speaks.
