Cats the most underrated team in the country?

underrated

That seems to be what the statisticians at Team Rankings think, at least with regards to where the human polls have the Cats ranked. Each week they break down the AP and Coaches’ polls, using fancy numbers and their big brains to statistically figure out what the humans have wrong. The Cats are apparently ranked well below what the computers say they should be, as they held firm at the #22 spot in both polls but find themselves rated as the 11th best team by the computers. I prefer the computers. Kentucky is joined in the ‘Underrated’ category by Wisconsin, Utah State and other honorable mentions like Washington and West Virginia.

The overrated group features some teams Kentucky fans are vaguely familiar with, as Florida and Louisville come in as two of the most overrated teams in the country. Florida, in fact, finds themselves ranked 29th by the computers but sits at #13 in the polls to take the title of overrated-est, while the Filthy Cards are 16th in the polls but only the 26th best team by the numbers. Apparently ‘public fornication by head coach’ isn’t one of the categories that helps out in the calculations. Anyway, it’s worth taking a look at to see whose rankings are too hot, too cold or just right. Enjoy.

i prefer the computers also, they probably don’t kill you for a narrow loss on the road.

Probably about where they belong. Having said that, I think they can be a good neutral site team, where some teams won’t.

I think the Cats are a legit Top 20 team, but they’re not the most underrated team in America by any means. Florida and Vandy are WAY overrated and so is Loserville and Duke.

Is anyone else going to have trouble rooting for the Vols tonight? It is kind of like watching the Duke/N Carolina game and wanting the Tar Heels to win…well, it isn’t that bad, but I really hate the Vols!

We’ve lost 5 of our last 6 road games. We are *not* a #11-calibre team yet.

Those computers run on Blue Kool-Aid.

“Apparently ‘public fornication by head coach’ isn’t one of the categories that helps out in the calculations.”, well at least it may take more than 15 seconds to satisfy the computers.

    7 So?

We lost close games on the road. Thats why we are rated so highly by just bout any computer system out there.

    Margin of victory matters.

The AP and Coaches polls are obviously about what have you done lately. Kentucky is 19-7 L’ville 20-7 Kentucky strength of schedule is ranked 16th while L’ville is 21 and we all know UK thumped L’ville in the chum bucket arena by 15, and L’ville is ranked 6 yes 6 spots ahead of UK.

Mudcat – will you hate the Vols even more after Ricky Pitino becomes their coach next season?

Um, probably should be in the 16-20 range but who cares. We don’t deserve to move up until we win a couple on the road.

Put down the crack pipe or the blue kool-aid. We are not underrated. We beat two teams that are awful last week, and beyond that have been horrible in conference play.

Rankings mean about as much as they ever have. squat.

  16. Nassau65

really? Kansas ranked overall #1 last year in the tournament. I believe they got put out in the second round.
    Rankings mean nothing.

I’m with the computers. When you look at the “luck” calculation, and a few close road losses that could have gone either way (as well as a number of solid neutral court wins and not losing at home) you have to think UK is better than #22 in the country.

And I think that these rankings DO matter. AP and Coaches’ Poll rankings, that is. Those seeding the tournament are more likely to drop an #11 ranked team in a 2/3 seed than the #22 team in the country. #22 puts you solidly in the 4/5 seed camp. So, being underrated by 11 spots (or w/e it would be) in these polls actually would have an effect, come March. Just imo though.
